Takilma Burn

What:

Several community-based prescribed burn trainings will take place in the next few days in Takilma, Williams, and Gold Hill. Anyone is welcome to participate at a level they feel comfortable, with guidance from experienced practitioners. These events will even be child-friendly! The burns will be in mixed forests that were previously thinned. These areas have missed approximately 15 to 20 fire return intervals since colonization, with significant impacts to our native fire-dependent biodiversity, and increasing hazardous fuel loads. The objective is to reintroduce fire to reduce litter and surface fuels, promote a diverse native plant understory, and learn together about good fire!

To bring:

  • Backpack with water, lunch, snacks.

  • Natural fiber clothing (cotton is fine) or Nomex®. No melty synthetic clothing (eg. polyester or other stretchy fabrics).

  • Eye protection (aka sunglasses).

  • Hard hat preferred (we will have some extras), baseball caps acceptable. Hair and embers don’t get along!

  • Fire boots or hiking boots that are preferably all leather. Rubber boots OK.

  • Leather gloves.

  • Fire tools if you have them (McLeod, Pulaski, shovel, etc.), some will be provided.
